How to choose a saturation plugin

Answer in brief

Choose the color you are missing first, then look for fine control at low settings: a drive that sets how hard it works, an output or automatic gain, a mix knob and a way to shape the tone. A trial on your own mix decides the rest.

Start from the color you are missing

Play a record you love and your own mix at the same level. If yours sounds thin in the low mids, you are missing the weight that tubes and transformers add. If it sounds brittle and spiky at the top, tape is the usual answer. If every part sounds right on its own but they do not belong together, try light console color on all of them. The guide to tape, tube, transformer and console saturation describes each.

Features that matter for subtle work

  • A drive or input control with fine steps near zero, because the useful range is often the first few decibels.
  • An output trim or automatic gain, so you can compare at equal loudness.
  • A mix knob for blending the saturated sound under the dry one.
  • Tone shaping, such as a high-frequency control, a tilt or a choice of tape speed.
  • Low aliasing or oversampling, so a bright source stays smooth when you push it.

One saturator or several

Many mixers keep one tape saturator and one tube or console saturator and use each for its own job. A versatile tool such as Klanghelm SDRR holds tube, digital, fuzz and desk colors in one window. A focused tape model such as Softube Tape offers three machines and little else to learn. If the warmth you are after is none of these, Studio 56 builds a saturation to your description.

Try it on a full mix and on one track

  • Raise the drive until you clearly hear grit, then back it off until the grit is gone.
  • Set the output so the meter reads the same with the saturator on and off.
  • Toggle it on a full mix and listen for depth and low-mid weight rather than brightness.
  • Then try it on a bass and a vocal alone, where the color is easier to hear.

Questions and answers

Can I get good saturation without paying?

No. Softube Saturation Knob costs nothing with a Softube account and Klanghelm IVGI is freeware. Paid saturators mostly add particular tape or tube models, tone controls and finer steps at gentle settings.
