Saturation on the mix bus and gain staging

Answer in brief

On the mix bus, aim for a change you notice only when you switch it off. Feed the saturator the level it was designed for, match its output to the bypassed sound and compare with your eyes off the screen.

Why the level going in matters

Models of analog gear react to how hot the signal is, just as the hardware did. Many expect a mix that sits well below digital full scale, and Klanghelm calibrates IVGI so that its 0 VU equals -18 dBFS. Feed that kind of model a mix peaking near 0 dBFS and even its gentlest setting is working far harder than you meant. Lower the input or the track faders until the saturator’s meter sits near its reference, then add drive from there.

How much is enough

On a full mix, a good setting makes the mix feel a little flatter and further away when you bypass it, while no single part changes. If the cymbals soften or the kick loses its punch, back off. Single tracks can take more, because one colored part is easy to forgive and a whole mix that has lost its attack is not.

Match loudness before you decide

  • Use the output control or automatic gain so the meter reads the same with the saturator on and off.
  • Where input and output can be linked, drive changes without a jump in volume. Black Rooster lets you link Magnetite’s Recording and Playback Level knobs this way.
  • Some saturators show the level change for you, as SDRR does with its RMS difference meter.
  • Have someone else toggle it while you listen, or close your eyes, so you judge the sound and not the button.

Where it sits in the chain

Put saturation before the bus compressor if you want the compressor to react to the rounded peaks. Put it after if you want the compression to stay as it was and only add color. Neither order is wrong. Keep the limiter last, since saturation placed after a limiter can push peaks back over its ceiling.
